  1. La citadelle de Bonifacio est établie sur un cap dominant la mer par une falaise de calcaire, roche tendre et assez rare en Corse dont le sol est plutôt granitique.
    Les immeubles semblent là immuables, mais jusqu'à quand ? Il ne faudrait pas oublier le caractère friable du calcaire, sa forte orientation à l'érosion, comme le rappelle si bien le pittoresque "Grain de Sable", ce gros bloc qui s'est détaché de la falaise il y a huit siècles.

  2. The old town and the fortifications of Bonifacio extend for some distance along the cliff-tops, which are about 70 meters (230 ft) high. The chalk-white limestone cliffs have been undercut by the ocean so that the buildings, which have been placed on the very lip of the precipice, appear to overhang it. The appearance from the sea is of a white city gleaming in the sun and suspended over the rough waters below.
