Gistel is the cradle of the veneration for St. Godelieve, one of the most revered saints in Flanders and in the north of France. Godelieve was born in the second half of the XIth century in a noble family from the County of Boulogne. She married Bertolt, lord of Gistel in a marriage of convenience. Godelieve was well-educated whereas Bertolt was a rough guy, and the marriage turned wrong. The husband remained absent during the three days of the marriage celebration. Godelieve lived in loneliness and humiliation since Bertold did not care at all for her. He lived in his own castle and exiled her wife to his mother's domain, where she was sheltered in a farm by the villagers. Her condition, there, was worst than a maid-servant. Godelieve escaped and came back to her parents, who complained at the Bishop of Tournai and the Count of Flanders. Bertolt was ordered to take her back and to behave correctly with her. But he didn't... On 6th July 1070, Godelieve was strangled by Bertolt's men and her body was thrown down into a well. Godelieve was eventually buried in the chapel of Bertolt's castle. Bertolt remarried and his second wife got a blind daughter named Edith. Thirteen years later, the second wife died and was buried in the chapel near Godelieve's tomb. Edith entered secretely the chapel, kneeled down on one of the two tombs and implored to recover her sight. The miracle came. And she could see that she had kneeled down on Godelieve's tombstone. Bertold repented, did several pilgrimages, and then he retired in a monastery until his death.

Un noble gentilhomme, Bertolf de Gistel, voulut à tout prix l'épouser et la demanda par l'entremise du comte de Boulogne, suzerain du père de Godelina. La belle-mère de la jeune femme l'obligea à vivre dans une cellule minuscule, avec très peu à manger, ce qui n'empêchait pas Godelina de partager ses maigres victuailles avec les pauvres. De son côté, Bertolf fit courir de fausses rumeurs sur son épouse, et le mariage ne fut pas consommé. Godelieve s'enfuit et retourna chez ses parents. Là, son père fit appel à l'évêque de Tournai pour obliger Bertolf à reprendre son épouse et à lui rendre ses droits et sa dignité d'épouse. Godelina retourna à Gistel, où elle fut étranglée par deux serviteurs de son mari, lequel tenta de faire passer ce meurtre pour une mort naturelle. Bertolf se remaria. Il eut une fille, née aveugle. La tradition relate que l'enfant fut guérie par l'intercession de Sainte Godelina. Après ce miracle, Bertolf se repentit, et s'en alla à Rome pour obtenir l'absolution de sa faute. Il partit ensuite en pèlerinage en Terre Sainte et se fit moine à Bergues. Sa fille fonda un monastère bénédictin à Gistel sous le patronage de Sainte Godelina.
