Le bâtiment a été édifié en plusieurs étapes. La construction primitive du bâtiment remonterait au début du 12ème siècle, et le choeur gothique, classé monument historique en 1920, daterait du 13ème. Partiellement incendiée en mai 1940 à la suite d'un bombardement et l'écrasement d'un avion allemand à proximité, l'église n'est rendue au culte qu'en 1962 après la restauration de la nef. Le choeur, lui, resté fermé par un mur de briques, ne sera restauré qu'à la fin des années 90. Désormais, cette partie de l'église est un lieu de passage obligé pour tout amateur d'art contemporain, puisqu'une quinzaine de sculptures et deux tours en chêne de 5m de haut, toutes oeuvres de l'artiste anglais Anthony Caro, constituent une expo permanente baptisée "Le Choeur de Lumière".
During World War II, a damaged aircraft crash-landed on the roof of the church in order to avoid the houses in the town, and set it on fire. The church itself was restored, but the choir was separated by a wall from the body of the church and left in ruins until ten years ago. The English artist Anthony Caro was commissioned by the French Ministry for Culture and Communication to make a sculptural installation that would bring new life to the redundant choir. Specifically for the project he has designed and built two huge oak towers each about 18 feet high. He has also made a concrete baptismal font and a spectacular series of steel, wood and terracotta sculptures to fill a series of niches in the walls of the apex of the choir.
