The original library, destroyed in the reign of Edward VI, was replaced in 1602 through the efforts of Sir Thomas Bodley Bodley (Greek scholar and teacher at Oxford, and then elected to Parliament), who gave it valuable collections of books and manuscripts and in his will left a fund for maintenance. The library has one of the great collections of English books, including a major Shakespearean section; its extensive manuscript collection is especially rich in biblical and Arabic material.
The eastern side of the Bodleians' Old School Quadrangle is dominated by the five-storied gate tower known as "the Tower of the Five Orders". The inner face of the Tower is treated as a display of classical architectural learning. Twin pairs of classical columns (Tuscan, Doric, Ionic, Corinthian and Composite) are mounted one above another.
